A lawyer by training, Yulia is senior researcher on Ukraine, where she has worked extensively documenting war crimes in Russia’s war against Ukraine in the wake of the February 24, 2022 invasion. Before that, she documented abuses in the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, and in occupied Crimea, including enforced disappearances, prosecution, and detention of Crimean Tatars and abuses by paramilitary groups. She has focused on a range of other issues in Ukraine, including refugee rights, the right to health, the rights of older people and people with disabilities, and legislative reforms to promote international justice. She has also worked on rights issues in several other countries in the Europe and Central Asia region, including women’s rights, and freedom of assembly, association, and speech. Yulia holds a master’s degree in professional communications from the University of Western Sydney and a bachelor's in law with a focus on criminal law and international law. She speaks English and Russian.
