A permanent resident originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, “Jean,” showed Human Rights Watch this list of damages from when his shop in Johannesburg was looted in September 2019. He has approached the police and civil society organizations with this list, requesting compensation so that he can begin to rebuild his life, to no avail.
